Connecting Flight

INT. AIRPORT TERMINAL – DAY

A young man, TIM, 20’s, dressed in comfortable adventure gear, sits next to a woman, SARA, or similar age and dress. The sit in the typically uncomfortable airport chairs, waiting. Tim half heartedly reads a newspaper while Sara plays on a tablet. The man lowers the newspaper and looks around. He taps his fingers on his chair and then across at Sara and her tablet.

TIM
I’m done with the newspaper if you want to swap?

SARA
Hmm, oh no, I’m right thanks.

TIM
It just had an interesting article on, umm…

Tim looks down to the newspaper in his lap where a headline reads ‘Potato sales increase’.

TIM
(CONT’D)
…potatoes. I thought you might like it, you know how interesting Peruvian agriculture can be.

SARA
Right. Yeah, maybe later.

She turns back to the tablet and continues working on it. Tim watches her for a beat.

TIM
You feeling tired at all? We’ve still got a couple of hours before the flight if you want to rest on my lap?

SARA
I’m good, I’ll probably just sleep on the plane.

TIM
You sure? My lap has been likened to that of a babies bottom.

SARA
Really? Who’s said that?

TIM
Well, no one, put I assure you it’s equally as soft.

SARA
I don’t think I should be sleeping on babies Tim.

TIM
You don’t need to, you have my lap!

SARA
Right, well I’ll pass anyway.

She again turns to the tablet, Tim quickly interrupts her again.

TIM
Hey do you mind if I borrow the tablet for a minute, I’ve just got to check something real quick

SARA
What do you want to check?

TIM
Oh nothing, it’ll just take a minute.

SARA
But what is it?

TIM
Just…if…Ricky Gervais has tweeted recently.

SARA
Right.

TIM
And the weather.

SARA
I can do that for you. Let me see, it’s going to be 24 degrees tomorrow, windy, annnnndddd Ricky Gervais has done twelve tweets in the last day.

TIM
Awesome, that’s all I needed.

Tim sits frustrated and looks around the room. He spots the snack stand.

TIM
(CONT’D)
I’ll be back in a minute.

He jogs off screen and returns a moment later tossing a bag of chips to Sara and opens one for himself as he sits down.

SARA
That’s surprisingly sweet of you.

TIM
I’m a gentleman.

Tim sits, opens his chips and watches Sara intently as she eats hers.

TIM
(CONT’D)
I’m a bit thirsty now, what about you? Do you want a drink?

SARA
Sure, that’d be great.

TIM
Cool, think you could get me one? I did get the chips and everything.

SARA
Alright, so much for being a gentleman.

Sara puts the tablet down and starts to get up. Tim watches her as his hand creeps towards the tablet. Sara turns and he snatches his hand back.

SARA
(CONT’D)
What kind do you want.

TIM
Oh, ahh, just whatever you’re getting.

SARA
I’m having an iced tea.

TIM
Then tea it to me! Forget I said that. Ice tea will be fine.

Sara gets up and Tim snatches the tablet into his lap gleefully. Tim calls out to Sara as she’s walking away.

TIM
(CONT’D)
I’m just going to borrow this for a minute.

His fingers wiggle above the screen in anticipation when a low battery symbol flashes twice on the screen and the tablet shuts off with a flash. Tim’s face drops.

Sara returns and hands him his drink. She sits, sees his now got the tablet and, from the bag beside her, pulls out a kindle. Tim looks over, interested.

TIM
(CONT’D)
I’m done with this tablet if you want to swap?
