Favourite Words

INT. GIRLS BEDROOM – AFTERNOON

Inside of a bedroom the screams ‘alternative teen’, complete with music posters of bands like Kings of Leon and Muse, a studio Ghibli bed set, and the general mess of discarded clothes and books all teenagers seem to be unaware of, sit a BOY and GIRL, both 18. They sit on a single bed in the far corner of the room. The boy sits up against the headboard, reading a book, while the girl rests between his legs painting her toenails. The boy is on the outskirts of puberty, no acne but a yet to be complete beard. He’s wearing an old T-shirt and jeans. The girl, pretty but not beautiful, looks like she could have just left a thirty seconds to mars gig. The door to the bedroom is closed and from an Ipod dock music plays, this room is private, their sanctuary. The boy pauses reading and looks down at her between his legs.

BOY
Do you have a favorite word?

GIRL
(Coyly)
Yes, I do, but I’m not going to tell you.

BOY
What, why not? I’ll tell you mine.

GIRL
I don’t know, are we ready for that? She says this with a smile, puts the nail polish to the side and twists around now lying on her stomach.

BOY
Oh you’re a funny girl aren’t you. Considering we’ve taken each others virginities I think we can hear each others favourite words.

GIRL
Hey I did you a favour getting rid of that virginity for you. You’d probably still have it if it wasn’t for our little dalliance. It was getting old, I think it was starting to go bad.

BOY
You did me a favour? What about yours? You’d had it for as long as me?

GIRL
Yes but girls are more precious. Boys ones start going bad between the ages of sixteen and seventeen, girls last as long as twenty five, then it gets a little dicey.

BOY
Where do you come up with this stuff?

GIRL
It’s common knowledge, duh.

BOY
You’re just avoiding the question. What is it?

GIRL
Hmm, no, let’s hear your’s first.

BOY
Crescendo.

GIRL
Crescendo. Yeah that’s a good one. Why do you like it?

BOY
I’ll tell you if you tell me yours.

GIRL
No you have to wait a little longer, but I’ll give you the first letter. D.

While saying this she wriggles up closer to him, their faces a hand widths apart. The boy thinks outloud.

BOY
D…D…Desire? Is that it? You little minx.

GIRL
No, but you’re close.

BOY
D…Dick! Is it dick? You’re filthy. They both laugh. She moves a little closer still.

GIRL
No it’s not dick, I’m not as gross as you. Why do you like crescendo?

BOY
I like the sound of it, how when you say it you can hear a crescendo in the word. But I also like what it stands for. A slow build, that increases until it comes to it’s fore with intensity.

GIRL
Well now who’s being filthy. The girl edges a little closer while the boy smiles down at her.

BOY
Not like that. Like the best bit of a good story or the climax of a powerful song.

GIRL
Yeah, I like that, good choice. You have won my approval.

BOY Have I won the right to hear your word?

GIRL
Yes, if you can figure it out. I said it to you earlier.

The boy looks up and mouths a D sound over and over. The girls smile increases as she watches him try to go through the transcript of their conversation, edging closer just a little bit more. His face lights up, he’s got it. He looks back down at her, their faces a centimeter apart.

BOY
Dalliance.

GIRL
Yes!

The girl laughs and moves into him, kissing him, pushing him back against the headboard. We look around the room, their private world, as the background music rises to a crescendo.
