Co-workers

EXT. LARGE CITY PARK – MORNING

Two women dressed in running gear jog quickly around the park.

TIFFANY
So yeah, basically the new job’s going shit, and the people there are…odd.

FIONA
What do you mean?

TIFFANY
Well it could just be me but they all walk around with these weird smiles on, it looks like they’re in pain but they’re happy about it.

INT. OFFICES – FLASHBACK

Tiffany walks through the cubicles of an office block, as she passes each of her co-workers the each give her a overly large, partially pained, and incredibly creepy smile.

EXT. LARGE CITY PARK – PRESENT

FIONA
I don’t think you can really complain about your new co-workers smiling at you, they’re probably just trying to make you feel welcome.

TIFFANY
Yeah I guess, but I’ve also noticed that some of them do this thing where they kind of, drool, while they’re working.

INT. OFFICES – FLASHBACK

At the same office the co-workers sit at their desks madly typing away with blank faces, each with a line of drool dribbling out of their slightly open mouths.

EXT. LARGE CITY PARK – PRESENT

FIONA
They’re probably all just really focused on their work. I really think you’re over thinking this.

TIFFANY
Maybe, I just think I’d feel more comfortable if they’d blink sometimes.

INT. OFFICES – FLASHBACK

Close up of one of the co-workers bloodshot eyes, wide, straining and as mentioned unblinking.

EXT. LARGE CITY PARK – PRESENT

FIONA
Oh Tiff, you always do this, you find something wrong with your job so you have an excuse to quit.

TIFFANY
No, I know, but there’s something off there. Like the other day I saw-

INT. OFFICES – FLASHBACK

Tiffany walks into the break room to see two of her co-workers seated at a table. At the same time each of them reach up and pull out an eyeball from their faces, swap it with the other and replace the others eyeball into their socket. In unison they both look over at Tiffany, blink a couple of times, their new eyes now working perfectly in their faces, and give her a wide pained smile.

TIFFANY
Also-

INT. OFFICES – FLASHBACK

Tiffany sees one of her coworkers put their finger into a USB port, pushing it in much farther than it should be able to go. Their eyes roll up in their head, their mouths open, and robotic, computer noises like a modem dialing up emits from it.

EXT. LARGE CITY PARK – PRESENT

TIFFANY
And-

INT. OFFICES – FLASHBACK
Tiffany walks into an empty dark room, files in her arm, and turns on the light. The room is revealed to be full of co-workers huddled together. In unison they all slowly turn to face her, mouths opening as they do. Their eyes and open mouths start to glow a bright blue. Tiffany turns off the light again, their blue eyes and mouths are now the main source of light as they continue to stare at her. She slowly backs out and closes the door.

EXT. LARGE CITY PARK – PRESENT

The two girls slow down their jogging, finishing in front of a large skyscraper.

FIONA
I’m sure you’re just blowing things out of proportion Tiff, just give it another couple of weeks- Wait, is this your office? Ohhh I see. Yeah this whole building is owned by pod people, has been for years. But I don’t want you using that as an excuse to quit your job okay?

TIFFANY
Okay

FIONA
Remember there’s no such thing as a perfect job. Every job has it’s little bugaboos, but you stick with it and one day you might be running that place.

TIFFANY
Yeah you’re right Fi, thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow.

The two women quickly hug and then Tiffany joins the flow of glassy eyed, smiling people as the enter the building. She waves to one.

TIFFANY (CONT’D)
Morning Todd.

The pod person know as Todd turns and gargles a mechanical noise back at her. She smiles like he’s said a perfectly normal greeting and enters the building.
