Lunchtime Romance

EXT. SCHOOL YARD – DAY

Two boys dressed in a blue school uniform sit on a bench and eat their lunch. Around them is the school yard, full of kids eating, playing or talking. Our two heroes are JAMES (12, scruffy hair, happy-go-lucky) and ANDY (12, short, over thinker).

JAMES
I thought you and Emma Hansard had started dating?

ANDY
What? No.

JAMES
Well she told me you were.

ANDY
Well, we kind of are, I don’t know. I mean her friend did ask me if I wanted to be her boyfriend and I did say yes, but I don’t know what that means.

JAMES
I think it means you’re her boyfriend.

ANDY
Really? Do you think?

JAMES
Yeah I reckon. Also she keeps looking at you.

The pair look over to a group of girls not far away. One of them EMMA (12, dark haired, smiley) looks over at them. She sees them looking and quickly looks away only to look back a second later.

ANDY
I guess we are dating then.

JAMES
Well shouldn’t you do something then.

ANDY
What? No. Like what?

JAMES
I don’t know, boyfriend stuff.

ANDY
Right, boyfriend stuff. What’s that?

JAMES
I’m not really sure. Should you have lunch with her?

ANDY
You think I should eat with her?

JAMES
Yeah, I think boyfriends and girlfriends eat together. My parents do it all the time

ANDY
Yeah so do mine. Do I offer her some of my sandwich?

JAMES
Yeah, that would be nice.

Andy looks down at his sandwich.

ANDY
But I really like my sandwich, and I’ve already eaten most of it.

JAMES
Oh, maybe not then. Why don’t you offer her some of your muesli bar?

ANDY
But I was saving that!

Andy looks down at his muesli bar sadly.

ANDY (CONT)
Alright I guess I could. How long do you think I should sit with her for?

JAMES
All of lunch I suppose. I think boyfriends and girlfriends are meant to want to spend lots of time together.

ANDY
But I was planning to play basketball for all of lunch!

JAMES
Sorry mate, but you’ve got responsibilities now.

Andy slumps, despondent.

ANDY
Oh man. How did this happen. Just yesterday an I was single guy who could do whatever he wanted. Now I’m sharing my muesli bar and missing out on playing basketball.

James puts his arm around Andy comfortingly.

JAMES
We’re grown ups now. I’m going to go play basketball.

James stand and runs over to the nearby basketball court. Andy watches for a moment, jealous, and the sulkily stands and walks over to Emma.
