Construction and Negotiation

INT/EXT. PORTABLE OFFICE, CONSTRUCTION SITE – DAY

VINCE (43) a large guy dressed in jeans and a jacket argues with MIKE (51), a bulky guy dressed in construction gear, inside a small portable office. Vince’s son, ROBBIE (8) stands behind him.

VINCE
What do you mean you can’t get out there till next month?

MIKE
Can you not see where we are? My boys and I are going to be locked up on this job for at least a month, probably more. Building your little restaurant isn’t exactly high up on my to do list.

VINCE
I don’t care-

Robbie pulls on Vince’s pant leg.

ROBBIE
Dad.

VINCE
Hold on Robbie, Dad’s talking. I don’t care about your-

Vince covers Robbie’s ears with his hands.

VINCE (CONT’D)
-fucking-

Vince takes his hands off Robbie’s head.

VINCE (CONT’D)
-to do list. I’ve been planning this for two years.

MIKE
What you’ve been doing is fucking around for two years.

VINCE
Really, you swear in front of my kid. Did you not just see me cover his ears.

ROBBIE
Dad.

VINCE
Hold on son.

MIKE
Sorry, but you have. Me and my boys were ready a month ago and you weren’t so we got another job, that’s business. But look, you’re my friend so how about if you increase the offer I’ll see if we can get started on your restaurant in two weeks time.

VINCE
Oh so there it is. That’s what’s going on here, you’re trying to rob me. What are we talking?

MIKE
An extra ten will see it happen.

VINCE
Ten! Are you mad, no, two at the most, and that’s me being generous.

ROBBIE
Dad.

VINCE
Hold on mate, Dad’s negotiating here.

MIKE
Two gets you nothing. I might consider nine.

VINCE
Nine!

ALEX (28) dressed in construction gear with tattoos on his arms sticks his head in the doorway.

ALEX
Boss, need you for a minute.

MIKE
Alright. Vince I’ll just be a minute.

Mike follows Alex out of the office.

ROBBIE
Dad.

MIKE
Yes, what is it mate?

ROBBIE
I need to go to the toilet.

VINCE
I don’t know where it is. Can you hold it?

ROBBIE
I don’t think so.

Vince looks around and sees a potted plant in the corner of the office hidden behind the desk.

VINCE
Look, just go in that plant over there.

ROBBIE
In the plant?

VINCE
Yeah, it’ll be good for it, just go.

Mike reenters, Robbie walks over to the corner.

MIKE
Sorry about that. So we’re agreed on nine?

VINCE
What? No, we’re not agreed on nine. We’re agreed on four, maximum.

MIKE
Vince, I like you, but four is going to get you no where. I’ve got work, I don’t need to do you any favours.

VINCE
Oh so me offering you work is a favour is it? No, no, I don’t want to hear it. I’m going to go, I’ll come back tomorrow see if maybe you’re less of an arsehole then. Robbie, you ready to go?

Robbie walks out from behind the desk and nods at his father.

VINCE (CONT’D)
Good, we’re going.

Vince looks across at Mike. Mike shrugs, unconcerned.

Beat.

VINCE (CONT’D)
Alright, we’re going.

Vince and Robbie walk out of the office and start to walk across the car park.

VINCE (CONT’D)
What’s that smell?

ROBBIE
I didn’t have any toilet paper.

VINCE
What? You did number two? You had to do a number two?

ROBBIE
Yeah.

VINCE
Shit, I don’t even think that was a real plant. Well I’ve never used that as a negotiation technique before. Alright Robbie we got to run, let’s run.

Vince and Robbie start to run to their car. Behind them Mike angrily storms out of the portable office.
