Space and the Things in it

EXT. LAKE – NIGHT

A full moon sits over a still lake. On it’s bank two met sit, one old and one young. They are fishing, a small campfire sits beside them. The older man, ROBERT (65), looks up at the night sky.

ROBERT
Son, you’re a scientist, when do you think the aliens will visit us?

The younger man, NICK (35), look across confused at his father.

NICK
Dad first of all I’m a geologist, I don’t know anything about space, you’d want to talk to an astrologist. Secondly, and far more importantly, you don’t believe in aliens do you?

ROBERT
Of course I do. You don’t?

NICK
No of course not. There has been no evidence for alien life at all.

ROBERT
Oh. But what about that TV show, the one about space?

NICK
Cosmos? The one with the American scientist?

ROBERT
No, the one with the robot and the hairy man.

NICK
Star wars? Dad, they’re movies, they’re not real. It’s not a documentary. What, you thought there was really wars in space involving shiny swords and jedi knights and little goblin type mentors? Wow they’ve really ripped off the fantasy genre.

ROBERT
Maybe, we don’t know it hasn’t happened. Who knows what’s out there in the universe. It’s a big place.

NICK
It is, but I think if there were any other life out there it would probably be very basic and unable to reach us. I don’t think we’re going to be visited by a group of all knowing, higher sentient beings capable of interstellar travel here to gift us with their advanced technologies anytime soon.

ROBERT
What if we’re the aliens?

NICK
What?

ROBERT
Well, we’re more evolved, capable of travelling through space, and the technology today is pretty amazing.

Nick sits speechless for a moment.

NICK
I, I suppose that’s true.

ROBERT
See, I told you there were aliens.
