The Brunswick Pirate

INT. CAFE – DAY

Two men sit in a busy cafe, food and drink in front of them. They are SHANE, late 20’s, average guy, and, GEORGE, late 20’s, dressed like a pirate, complete with eye patch.

SHANE
She says I can’t commit, and the worst part is she’s right!

GEORGE
Well, do you want to commit?

SHANE
Yes! That’s the thing, I do. But every time I think about it or go to talk to her about it I freeze up, the words don’t come out.

GEORGE
And why do you think that is?

SHANE
I, I guess I am scared. But not just for me, for her too. What if she commits to me and I let her down? What if I blow it?

GEORGE
But you won’t.

SHANE
You don’t know that, and neither do I. The fact that I can’t commit to her says that I am likely to fuck it up at some point.

GEORGE
Mate, you’re totally over thinking this. The fact that you are this worried about it says it won’t happen. Just make the commitment, you’ll be fine.

SHANE
That’s easy for you to say, commitment comes easy to you.

GEORGE
What do you mean?

SHANE
You’re wearing a pirate outfit for fuck’s sake! You’ve been wearing it for almost a year simply because Michael dared you to!

GEORGE
Well, that’s not such a big deal.

SHANE
Not a big deal? You realise every one in here keeps looking at you? People call you the Brunswick Pirate. There’s a facebook page about you! Yet you still happily keep wearing this outfit day after day. You even lost depth perception thanks to that eye patch. That’s commitment!

GEORGE
I don’t think you should compare committing to your girlfriend to me wearing a pirate outfit.

SHANE
But don’t you get it? I couldn’t even commit to that. Auhhhhh, she’s going to break up with me.

GEORGE
Can I tell you something?

SHANE
Sure.

GEORGE
I can see through my eye patch.

SHANE
What?

GEORGE
I can see through it. I wasn’t going to sacrifice my depth perception just to complete a bet. Do you think that makes me less committed?

SHANE
No, of course not. Look at you, you’re a pirate.

GEORGE
Right. Commitment comes with compromise. From both parties. Committing to someone doesn’t mean you’ll be prefect forever, it just means you’ll be willing to try to be the best person for them that you can. Just like I’ll be the best pirate I can until the year is up, even if that pirate isn’t willing to give up twenty twenty vision in order to commit to the bit.

SHANE
This is such a weird analogy.

GEORGE
I know, did it work?

SHANE
Yes.

GEORGE
Good. Go.

Shane races from the cafe. George, aka The Brunswick Pirate, leans back in his chair and sips his tea.
