Mitosis – Act 1, Scene 2

This scene is part of the first draft of a screenplay I’ve written as part of my Masters. See past days to catch up on the rest of the story. Happy reading.


A photo of two identical looking boys, age 8, fills the screen. They have their arms around each other and smile widely, dressed in the florescent colours of the eighties, complete with bum bags.

A finger enters the screen and swipes across. Another photo, the same boys, older now, around 12, a beach behind them. The too are looking at each other and laughing.

He’s not just my twin brother though, he’s my best friend.

Swipe. Another photo. The boys are older still, they both wear overly large and ornate suits next to a sign that reads 2002 Debutante Ball. They hug affectionately while smiling at the camera. In the background sit two bored looking dates.

The forced, chirpy, voice of a thirty something year old female replies.

So you like being a twin?

That’s a hard question to answer, I’ve only ever been a twin. Do you like not being a twin?

Swipe. A photo of Daniel, Nathan and a girl, all around age eighteen, sit on a couch, family photos on the wall behind them. Nathan has his arm around the girl, They both smile, Daniel does not.

And is that your girlfriend?

My girlfriend? No. No, I’ve never really had a girlfriend. Nathan has had a couple…

Swipe. Daniel and Nathan sit closely together on the same couch as the previous photo. Daniel has his arm around Nathan’s shoulders as the both smile widely at the camera.

…but they never last long. Swipe.

The two brothers stand back to back in quirky odd couple pose in the middle of a run down, first unit, lounge room. Both are dressed in identical batman costumes under a banner that reads ‘Nate and Dan’s Housewarming’. Behind them people eat and drink in various costumes.
