Mitosis – Act 1, Scene 3

This scene is part of the first draft of a screenplay I’ve written as part of my Masters. See past days to catch up on the rest of the story. Happy reading.

INT. TRAVEL AGENCY – DAY

The owner of the female voice, a travel agent, sits in a bright red uniform a fake smile plastered on her face at a desk with a computer and some nick knacks strewn across it. Behind her are various travel posters. She cuts Daniel off.

TRAVEL AGENT
I’m sorry to interrupt, but were you actually hoping to travel somewhere?

Across from her sits DANIEL REEVES (25, slim, neurotic, think an Australian Woody Allen) recognizable as one half of the pair from the photos.

DANIEL
Right, yes. Yes, well Nathan, my brother, went to Rio de Janeiro a couple of day ago, who knows why. I came back from a conference in Brisbane to find this note saying he had decided to go, I mean who does that? Either way I’ve been doing some research on the place and it’s basically a death trap. So now I have to go over there and bring him home.

TRAVEL AGENT
Well Rio de Janeiro is a very beautiful city. Copacabana beach is one of the most beautiful in the worl-

DANIEL
Copacabana beach? People get held up at knife point there everyday. Plus who knows what’s in that water, I know I don’t want to find out.

TRAVEL AGENT
(rattled)
Well the occasional person might be held up, but that can happen anywhere. However Rio is also the home of sugarloaf mountain, the views from there are-

DANIEL
With the rickety old cable cars! No thank you. Why don’t I just jump off a cliff to save myself the trouble.

TRAVEL AGENT
Okay. Well I can assure you it’s a wonderful city, I’m sure you’ll end up having a lovely time.

DANIEL
Are you kidding me. No, no it’s a cesspool of danger and disease. Here look at this.

On his tablet Daniel brings up some news articles. Daniel flicks through them and reads each headline as it comes up.

DANIEL (CONT’D)
A couple abducted in Rio de Janeiro. Riots continue to tear Brazil apart. Rio’s drug problem increases. Trained dogs rob tourists in Rio. Look at this one, a list of the top ten drug lords in the country.

Daniel shows her a list of names with a portrait beside each name.

TRAVEL AGENT
Are some of those women?

DANIEL
Yes, literally everyone’s a criminal over there.

TRAVEL AGENT
To be honest it’s kind of impressive. We don’t have any female drug lords in Australia. Go feminism.

Daniel points to one of the names lower down on the list MARIANA CAVALCANTI.

DANIEL
This one’s known for decapitating people.

TRAVEL AGENT
I’m confused, do you want to go over there or not?

DANIEL
Of course I don’t want to go over there. Who would want to go to a place where even the animals are criminals? I have to, Nathan’s over there. I’m not going to do nothing and just let himself get hurt. Are you not listening? He’s my brother.

TRAVEL AGENT
But can’t you just call him, or message him or something if you’re so worried.

DANIEL
I’ve tried all that he hasn’t replied. No doubt some dog has stolen his phone by now. That’s if he hasn’t been decapitated yet. That’s why I really need to get over there as soon as possible.

TRAVEL AGENT
Okay, well, that’s fine Mr. Reeves, when were you hoping to leave?

DANIEL
Tomorrow would be best.

TRAVEL AGENT
Tomorrow! I don’t think that will be possible, it’s very rare to be able to gat a seat on a flight the day before it leaves.

The travel agent begins typing on the keyboard a concerned expression on her face.

DANIEL
It can’t be that hard, here let me do it.

Daniel stands up and walks around the desk forcibly pushing the travel agents hands away from the keyboard as he begins to type.

TRAVEL AGENT
Sir, you really can’t-

DANIEL
When was the last time you cleaned this keyboard? They really should be cleaned twice a month you know.

TRAVEL AGENT
Mr. Reeves if you’d just let me do my job-

DANIEL
And this screen is so dusty. Do you realise how much bacteria is in dust? Now how do I choose priority seating?

TRAVEL AGENT
Would you please sit down! I’m more than capable of doing my job.

Daniel, shocked, moves back to his seat.

DANIEL
Alright, I was helping. You know you really need to have more patience if you’re going to work in the customer service industry.

TRAVEL AGENT
(angrily)
Noted.

The travel agent calms herself and looks back to her screen. She sheepishly wipes the screen with her sleeve then clicks the mouse a few times.

TRAVEL AGENT (CONT’D)
(downcast)
Oh, well this is sad but it seems a man has had a heart attack so I can in fact get you on a flight to Rio tomorrow.

DANIEL
(exuberant)
Well that’s great. It was meant to be.
